As writers/producers, the brothers Sundberg have been a part of the Stargate stable and have had  six #1 songs across Scandinavia with their own band Donkeyboy, while, as producer/writers they have had hits with Lila and Chris Holsten among others. Micah recently directed Eric Clapton’s "White Christmas” video, a heart-warming holiday Claymation masterpiece. Lasse has been a part of the Donkeyboy/Rat City production team for several years whilst working on a number of outside projects in his native Norway.

Hi guys! Thank you for finding time in your schedule to do this interview. Who are the members of the Rat City project and what musical background have you got?

Hey! Two brothers Kent and Cato, and their friend Lasse are members. Lasse and Kent are both educated within music, but Cato is self-taught.The first time I really wanted to make music was around 1995, when I started recording guitar riffs to an old tape recorder.

Why have you chosen this name for your project? What is the significance?

We imagined a dark world kinda like the old mafia/pink panther days and thought the name Rat City sounded cool!

Your new single, "Kind of Love", features the vocal stylings of Norwegian newcomer Isak Heim, plus a beautifully rendered animated video, evocatively depicting the ultimate dysfunctional relationship. Please tell us more about the collab and how you came up with the ideas behind it? What was it that made you, Micah Monkey, and Isak Heim feel this was the right time to work together?

We met Isak years ago and have really made a bunch of songs together. Suddenly we had several songs finished and started to think we maybe should release something together instead of just trying to pitch everything.Micah Monkey we met through our manager, and our collab first started with him making a music video for our band Donkeyboy.

If you had to choose one element of your music that defines your music as a whole, what would it be and why?

I think that has to be the melodies. They have a slightly cold Northern vibe.

Are there any artists that you draw inspiration from -  if so who and what sort of music?

We all have different backgrounds, but for me (Cato) it was really Tom Petty, Depeche mode, A ha, queen etc…, but also all the music that was on MTV back in the day. In the later years there have been many new inspirations.

Who have you always dreamt of working with and why? How would you go about accomplishing this?

If I could choose one no matter what, it would have been Freddie Mercury. Too bad that is close to impossible! :)

People starting out in music may be questioning what they need to get started. What was the first set of equipment/software you ever bought?

I started out with a tape recorder, then a Fostex 4 track recorder and then a Boss 8 track, but it really started when we got Cubase with a couple of softsynths back in 2001 I think.

What’s your most treasured tool in the studio and what’s so good about it?

Right now it`s probably an old Juno 106, but we can`t lie, Antares autotune is pretty nice too.

What do you look for when working with an artist?

A good/weird voice, with a little touch of attitude.

Who is your favourite producer at the moment?

Seeb!

Who would you like to remix your music?

I guess that also has to be Seeb right now!

How do you think the new generation will define itself?

Lost in phones and social media! Forgetting how to live life I guess! Pretty bad, got to be aware of not losing myself with that as well.

What are a few key lessons you’ve learned about producing that other aspiring musicians and producers could take advice from?

Don`t hold on to crappy ideas for too long. Move on and make a better one.

Please name 3 of your favourite classic dance music tracks.

'What Is Love’ by Haddaway / Always On My Mind’ by Pet Shop Boys / 'Freestyler’ by Boomfunk Mc`s

A favourite quote, something that inspires you.

Save as = Save my ass

What other hobbies or interests do you have?

Gaming, golf, fishing and working out, I have been able to game, play golf and fish for many years.

What’s next on your agenda?

That will be to get our second single wrapped up!! Also releasing a single for our band Donkeyboy in March.

A message for all your fans out there who love electronic music.

Use earplugs!! Love from Norway! :)
